Travel to New Zealand

While unescorted, or fully independent travel (FIT) has become popular among many travel markets, New Zealand, like Australian FIT travellers, are among the few “true” FIT visitors to BC and Canada. That is, they are more inclined to make all their own arrangements via phone, fax or Internet directly with suppliers rather than purchasing any holiday packages.

Currently, New Zealand’s population is fairly youthful with 65.5% of the current population between the ages of 15 and 64. Population growth, however, slowed significantly (to less than 1.0% in 1999 and 2000) and it is expected that New Zealand will experience growth in older age segments in the future, resulting in an aging population. A youthful population may be more willing to travel internationally and seek the type of adventure available in BC. However, older visitors may be more able to travel, having more time and a higher disposable income.

June, July and August are the most popular months for New Zealand travellers to visit BC, although in recent years some relative growth has been seen in the shoulder seasons, particularly in April and May. New Zealand entries during the peak season were noticeably lower in 2000, likely due to the Sydney Olympics, which occurred in September.

Leisure visitors from New Zealand generally visit BC for three main purposes: general sightseeing, visiting friends and relatives and outdoor/wilderness activities. During their stay, the most popular activities include visiting National or Provincial parks, skiing and/or snowboarding, visiting attractions, travelling on cruise ships, shopping and urban sightseeing.
